Presentaion

European sections have two objectives : to offer students an opening to international experience and to teach a non-linguistic experience in a foreign language.

Dorian offers two European sections, which both span the last two years of high school :

  • The professional trade school program in sign-making and signage
  • The programs in general science, S, and science and technology, SI and STI2D

Context

The scientific degrees « S option SI » (Science and Engineering Sciences) and « STI2D » (Science, Industrial Technologies and Sustainable Development) are general degrees in science with a specialization in technology.

Dorian has 2 groups of Junior and Senior years in « S option SI » and three groups in « STI2D », which account for approximately 250 students, among which 15 are enrolled in a European section. These students follow an extra 2 hours of class per week, taught in English, in:

  • English culture
  • Engineering sciences

At the end of their senior year, students in the European sections have to take an oral exam called « DNL » (Non-Linguistic Discipline). If they get a mark over 10/20 as well as over 212/20 for their classical English exam, their high-school degree will bear the special mention European section in English.

Objectives

Nowadays, English is the language of use in the scientific and technologic areas. For this reason, we encourage our most talented and motivated students to join the European section and strengthen their skills in English.

Additionally, students with the special mention European section in English on their degree increase their visibility and have more chances to enroll in their preferred undergraduate degrees.

Below is an example of an educational course in engineering sciences as taught in the European sections.

The teacher starts with an English multimedia presentation (1st and 2nd parts), dealing with a functional model of information processing systems followed by an introduction to emerging technologies. During the presentation, the teacher will ask the students to interact actively and will give them a take-home questionnaire that will be discussed during the following session.
